Reimagining Medical Education: Insights from AMEE Vienna

Recently, delegates from the Federation University School of Medicine travelled to Vienna to join the international health education community at the annual AMEE conference. Our team; Associate Professor Natasha Yates, Dr Sharee Stedman, Dr Kristel Kemmerling, Professor James Fraser, and Associate Professor Johanna Lynch returned inspired and equipped with global perspectives on the future of clinician training.

Validating Our Educational Model

Attending the diverse range of AMEE presentations provided strong international validation for our foundational approaches. It was incredibly encouraging to see global alignment with our focus on Programmatic Assessment for Learning, Whole Person Care, and the mindful inclusion of technology in education. The international community was immensely generous in sharing personal experiences and offering actionable recommendations for the path forward in teaching and assessment.

Deconstructing the Status Quo

A major highlight for the team was the final plenary delivered by AMEE President-elect, Professor Vishna Devi Nadarajah, titled:  “Where the Mind is Without Fear: Reimagining Health Professions Education.”

Professor Vishna’s presentation was a bold call to action, challenging educators to:

  • Deconstruct traditional academic hierarchies.

  • Humanise medical training at every level.

  • Embrace inclusive and globally connected frameworks

The AI Imperative in Co-Teaching

Artificial Intelligence was a dominant theme throughout the conference. A key takeaway for our faculty was a pragmatic one: students will engage with AI for learning, with or without institutional guidance.
  • Embracing the shift: This reality makes it vital for medical educators to actively learn and grow our understanding of these tools.

  • Human-AI partnership: Rather than resisting, we must explore how AI capabilities can safely and effectively support modern co-teaching and learning environments.

Socially accountable medical education

During their international symposium, co-presented alongside esteemed colleagues from the UK, the Netherlands, and Canada – Associate Professor Johanna Lynch and Associate Professor Natasha Yates spoke directly about respect for generalism across the curriculum underpinning socially accountable medical education. By elevating the role of General Practitioners and embedding a deep respect for generalism at the core of our curriculum, we are actively dismantling traditional hospital-centric hierarchies.

Our team is already putting these concepts into practice. We are deeply committed to humanising healthcare by embedding students directly within regional communities, perfectly aligning with the global call for compassionate, community-focused medical education.

About New Medical Education Pty Ltd

Federation University Australia, in partnership with NewMed, is establishing a new medical school to address Australia’s urgent need for more doctors, particularly in primary care. This shortage is felt most acutely in rural, regional, and outer-urban communities. Federation and NewMed bring a shared commitment to address this critical gap through co-operative workplace learning, health professional education and research, with a strong emphasis on primary healthcare and a strong commitment to First Nations peoples and communities.

This new School of Medicine, operating on a full fee-paying basis, offers a contemporary curriculum grounded in the latest pedagogical evidence. Together, we aim to provide a new generation of doctors equipped to serve communities where they are needed most. Listening to and working with diverse communities are important commitments of both the School and the university.

The School of Medicine has secured formal approval to advance to Stage 2 of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) accreditation process. Following the scheduled submission in late 2026, the School anticipates welcoming its inaugural cohort during 2027.
