NewMed Leadership Visits Federation University to Advance Regional Medical School Partnership

The NewMed Board of Directors, alongside the CEO and Dean, Professor Stephen Tobin and the Chief Financial and People Officer, Sonja Knowles, were recently hosted by Federation University at the School of Mines and Mt Helen campuses. The strategic leadership discussions proved highly valuable for all parties, reinforcing the deep collaboration between the two institutions.

Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley, said the joint leadership engagement demonstrates strong momentum and shared purpose.

“These meetings are an important milestone as we move toward accreditation of our new School of Medicine,” Professor Bentley said. “Federation and NewMed are united in our clear ambition – to train more doctors in, and for, regional communities.”

The visit highlighted a powerful alignment of mission and values, particularly regarding the future of regional healthcare delivery. Professor Stephen Tobin said that the collaboration reflects a strong alignment in mission and values.

“These joint meetings highlight the depth of alignment between Federation University and NewMed,” he said. “We share a commitment to caring for rural, regional and outer metropolitan communities, and to delivering medical education that is grounded in real-world practice and strong health system partnerships.”

NewMed and Federation University Australia: Preparing for AMC accreditation

Across 22–24 June, the NewMed team convened in Brisbane for a series of workshops towards becoming the School of Medicine at Federation University. This marked a significant milestone as we advance on our AMC accreditation pathway,  continuing to prepare to deliver the innovative MD program for Australia.

The NewMed team was delighted to host Federation University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley, alongside Associate Professor Jason Giri, the Dean of Quality, Accreditation and Partnerships. This close collaboration provided an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the clinical depth, rigour, and contemporary structure of the graduate-entry medical program.

The Chair of the NewMed Board, Emeritus Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld AC OBE also participated in the workshops, working together with university leadership to review the program of work. The combined efforts across the week reinforced the shared commitment to educational excellence, generating momentum towards accreditation, preparation for delivery and applications.
